The aerosol can filled with various volatile vapours to aid the starting of an otherwise dead engine -
After a discussion at work today me and one of the best mechanics I know found that various people had told us both over the years that "ooooh
you shouldn't use that, your engine will get addicted to it"
Neither of us could recall how or why this could supposedly happen so I thought I would put it to the PH masses for an answer OR is it simply a case of it doesn't fix the problem so you'll need to keep using it?

the plastic bottle filled with thick gloop
is warmly diluted and applied
clumps of white bubbles arise
and then fall, diluted again down to the drains
the metal beast gleams.

it could be that an engine with an ECU might 'learn' about the fuelling required for engine start up, if you were using the 'easy start' repeatedly, over time it may decrease fuelling levels (or something) when it starts, meaning that it would then be unable to start without the spray. I don't see how you could get any effect on an engine without quite a complex engine management system.

maybe because it's meant to be a "last resort" temporary solution, but most people don't bother finding and fixing the underlying problem if the magic spray works. Thus, as the problem gets worse over time, more and more of the spray is required at more frequent intervals.

If you snorted the contents of said can (the volatile vapours one, not the soapy gloop one), you might become addicted.

Plenty of people can't get going in the morning without a cup of coffee.

It's probably the same with cars. Or something.

this.

the engine is worn out so you use car drugs that starts it but does,nt fix it so the worn out engine gets worse needing more car drugs. fix the worn engine and it won,t need car drugs

Easy Start, now that is a blast from teh past, as a nipper in the sea cadets, we had an old Cheverton launch with a very truculant old engine that would only start after about 3 cans of easy start had been dumped into it!!! (i can almost smell the stuff now ... we were all prety much high on the vapours by the time it fired up hehe )

Not sure if our old engine was adicted to the easy start or just never serviced mind you hehe

IIRC, The "addiction" is due to the fact that the ether strips the oil off the bores and causes excessive bore wear. In the old days when a carburettor was badly set up, the ignition system a bit asthmatic, or the engine was worn and had low compression, there were occasions when it would help an engine get started from cold.
These days (efi etc), if the engine doesn't start, there's a problem that should be fixed, save the easy start for yer lawn mower, or sniffing

Thanks for the replies, I'd just like to add that I don't need to use it nor does my mechanic friend to start any of our vehicles, easy start just happened to come up in conversation.
It would appear, save for a few sensible answers nobody here has a clue either!

The truth is that once you resort to easystart the engine already has issues, maybe low compression or whatever.

Easystart starts it, it runs and wears more so needs more easystart.

Not hard to work out, it's a machine not an organism so unlikely to develop an addiction.
