I'm due to set off at 15:00 today to Glasgow from Hull and was just wondering if anyone knows what the road conditions are like on the A66 as I'll have to go that way and it's snowing heavily in Hull at the moment.

Thanks in advance

I live about 10 miles from Brough at the Cumbrian end of Stainmoor. Coming from Penrith this morning the illuminated signs weren't saying there was any problem and the A66 was generally clear between there and Appleby. The gritters are very active.

Having said all of that, I don't know how bad it is on the North Yorks. side.

Bear in mind snow is also forecast.

Worst case is usually that you'll have to divert the A66 and head up to Newcastle to cross the A69, which is normally clear when Stainmoor is blocked.

Sod it, in East Yorks where I am it has been snowing heavily again for ages - getting very thick in places and the main A166 closed at one point. I think I'll stay at home tomorrow.

The A1(M) is a totally white with compacted snow in County Durham right now. lots if skid trails leading off to the barriers and verge. It looks like cars have swapped ends a few times, which must have been fun.

Looks like there's an RTC (snow related?) on the A66 at the moment. Otherwise everything over that way looks trouble free at the moment. Traffic England mentioned snow around Bowes but not further west.

M6 J36-40 is single lane, pretty much. Moving but slow (20-25mph)

Anyone know what it's like in Darlington / Catterick at the moment? Only idle curiosity really as I was up there most of last week but managed to finish off the work we were doing and get back down South Thursday afternoon before the bulk of the snow hit, so I was wondering how much more has fallen since we left and whether we'd have been staying longer than intended had we not left Thursday?!

Any news on the conditions this morning. I need to travel from Bishop Auckland to Lancaster via the A66 and A685 to the M6. What are the current conditions of this road please?

I decided to give the A1 & A66 a miss last night and went via Manchester. Looking back I'm glad I did, it's a longer route but after reading some of the above posts the A1 didn't sound to good. Thanks for the replies.

Just an update, I got from bishop auckland to lancaster via the A66 and A685 today and it was ok. The roads were pretty white all the way through barnard castle and up onto stainmoor, but fairly clear from brough onwards. Its nothing that cant be passed without some care and being prepared to slow right down.

BBC reckon A66 closed near Bowes.
