There are lots of 'nice' tiptronic cars out there, in fact probably more nicer cars than manual one's. As I don't want a tiptronic would it be possible to convert one into a manual box? That way you get the pic of potentially 'quieter life' cars. Only a theory but if it can be done any idea's on cost? Do ECU's and other expensive bits need changing?

It's feasible, but costs loadsa munny. Never going to be a cost effective solution I'm afraid.

Manual gearboxes cost at least #3k from what I've seen.

The list of things to change is quite big. Gearbox, clutch mechanism and hydraulics, probably the flywheel and maybe starter motor, pedal box, ecu to add, console, loads and loads.

Not a crazy question, and one I'd probably ask as well. Shame it's not cheaper and easier to perform. I've had a 993 Tip and loved it at first but quickly went off it . I bought it because my previous 993 had quite a stiff clutch and was giving me grief in traffic. When I sold the Tip I bought a manual, and the clutch was lovely and light and nowhere as heavy as a 997! So you can get a 993 with a light clutch, trouble is, nice manual ones are thin on the ground - especially in the best colour - Polar Silver.

I've driven lots of 993 manuals and not one has had a clutch as light and comfortable as the 997's I've driven.

The other awkward thing about 993 clutches is the pedal movement which causes your heel to always lifting off the floor and float on the pedal which for me makes town driving pretty uncomfortable.
You've not driven a 997 GT3 then! Could never be described as light.

The pedal height in a 993 isn't so bad, although I do wear size 13s.

You've not driven a 993tt then. It's clutch has additional hydraulic assistance and hence is as light as any modern runabout.

Can be done but only really feasible if you can source the gearbox cheaply, are friendly with a breaker and do all the mechanical work yourself.

This is a very old thread...and something that might be more feasible now than 7 years ago.

The price differential must now be c.£10K between nice Tip and Manual cars.

Has anyone done his recently or looked into it?

Whilst it could be done, at a price, it will always retain the stigma of being a modified 'Tip'.

The value of the best cars lies in their 'originality'

I can see this becoming a popular conversion....especially on something like a 993 2S. I think if you get it done by someone reputable it wouldn't be that much of an issue come sale time. Aston has a year long queue of people wanting to convert Vanquish to manual at £30k a pop and there are plenty of E-types that have been converted from LHD to RHD or had a manual box added and still fetch big money.

Quite surprised a marque specialist isn't actively offering it as a conversion.

I had to price this up recently, looks a bit like this:

Used stuff
5000 Gearbox
250 Shift rod
100 Shifter
250 Pedal box
250 Speedo (without gear markers)
100 Pedal board & carpet

New stuff
200 Clutch fork & shaft (if it didnt come with gearbox)
1100 Driveshafts (OWCH)
1300 Flywheel & clutch (RS, be rude not to)
90 Clutch slave
100 Clutch master (if it didnt come with pedal box)
200 Starter Motor
150 Hydraulic lines (Porsche or aftermarket)

Plus of course some labour. For a C2 I think I could probably do it in a few days if everything was ready to go and didnt have to wait for parts to arrive.

You can maybe get some parts cheaper if you find more bits used or get some good deals on some bits (like gearbox) which could brink the price down a bit.

Nothing much to sell after the conversion to recoup cash, tip gearboxes are worth 800-1000 but take a while to sell (if ever)

Try this thread.

Jaz did a 964 tip to manual, so worth giving Steve a call.
