Where do your front tires contact the car when you turn the steering wheel? What have you done to limit the travel of the steering rack?

The only place mine contacted was the back of the headlight housing cover.

If you need to restrict the the rack movement then a sleeve fitted around the end of the rack shaft will do the job. One method is to fit a worm drive hose clip (Jubilee clip in the UK) around the shaft. You don't see the mod as it is inside the gaiter.

This is my experience as well, the contact point for the tire is the light box.

I do have the updated light boxes but they look like they are made for another brand of car. They just didn't fit.

The reason that I'm bringing this up is because this is what I did when fitting wider inner rim halves to my car:

1) Turn the front wheels to the point where they contact the light box

2) Lift the front body work and measure the clearance on the inside of the opposite tire where it approaches the frame (diagonal brace on the radiator pipe return).

3) Repeat for the opposite side.

4) Add the available space to the inner rim half only, the outer rim and the rim center are unchanged.


I did restrict the rack travel as you suggested.

Every once in a while I get mail about how the added width of my front wheels affects the turning radius of the car and the answer is that it didn't. The turning radius it determined by the contact point on the light box despite my car having 295/30/18 tires fitted to 11" front wheels.

I'll try to add more photos of this to the USA website. It really was a worthwhile change. If desired you could use 275/30/18 on the front with a narrower wheel (10") if you could get the new light boxes to fit.

How heavy is the steering with that width of front tyre?

Do the wider tyres cure the tendency towards understeer on the track?

The steering is definitely harder at parking lot speeds but the feel is great at anything else.

I have 2.0 degrees negative camber front and 1.4 in the back. It was after the wider front tires were fitted that I finally began to fully use the rear tires. I felt like if I either needed to accelerate hard out or trail brake in very hard to get the car to pivot with the stock front tire size. Now the car is neutral in steady state corners and the inputs needed to throttle steer it are much smaller.

This summer will bring more track time and I'll put a G-meter on it. The number will be much, much higher than previously.

Khumo make a 285/30 x 18 road legal track day tyre (V70A) which fits to a 10" rim.

I am thinking of new wheels anyway so I can get fronts to the sizes necessary to fit the wider tyres.

Might need a larger diameter steering wheel too though!!!
