Nürburgring Tourist Laps: The Future

Don't worry, tourist laps are here to stay, and with added bells and whistles

If our investigation into the latest developments at the Nürburgring has got you feeling all downhearted then fear not. The unique tourist laps enjoyed by many a PHer over the years are here to stay and remain at the core of the Nürburgring's activities and - as we've seen - all-important revenue stream.

And though prices have risen this year - an all-year ticket by as much as 26 per cent - new features will be introduced.

One of these includes officially sanctioned video cameras, available to rent from the track. As most seasoned visitors know, tempting as it may be, filming your nine minutes of glory (or seven seconds of infamy) is officially outlawed in public driving, with offenders receiving bans on the spot.

Aware that the ban has been widely flouted but fearful of accidents - fatal or otherwise - ending up on YouTube, circuit operators Nürburgring Automotive will run a pilot scheme that legitimises tourist drivers recording their laps for posterity.

"We know people want to have a movie of driving on the Nordschleife," says a spokesperson for Nürburgring Automotive, "but the problem was we wouldn't be able to see what was on the camera and we didn't want to have any images of accidents on the track." To that end a limited number of cameras will be available to rent from the spring. Once the footage has been scrutinised for any unwelcome recordings it will be released to the driver in a format to be confirmed.

The Nürburgring gets control over the footage being recorded on the circuit and extra revenue stream while we can get our laps on film without having to resort to hidden bullet cams secreted into numberplates or in deeply personal areas of dash-mounted soft toys (you know who you are...) This does, of course, mean boasts of "that was eight minutes bridge to gantry, easy" may be harder to prove over steak on a stone in the Pistenklause, so think carefully before signing on the line.

Our source at the Nürburgring was also able to comment on a rumour that growing pressure from the government threatening the compulsory use of transponders in tourist driving to monitor noise and pollution levels have been overstated, for now at least.

"They will not be used during public driving," says our spokesperson. "When we talk about transponders we're talking about during races so we're not going to put transponders in [tourist drive] cars for 2011."

And what about improvements to the - at times - chronically unsuitable car park and entrance to the Nordschleife? "We know the problem, we're working on solutions for this," is all they'll say for now; anyone caught up in the regular post-closure gridlock at public days knows this can't come soon enough.

Ace!! I hope to go round the Ring when I'm a tad older wink
Playing games has given me what is clearly a false sense of confidence that I know the track perfectly so I'm itching to give it a go. And this saves forking out on a new camera smile

This is excellent news! the lack of being able to use a videocamera on a tourist day has been a big downer for many! Thank you Nurburgring!!

So how will it work, we can rent theirs or use our own but they need to review the content?

imagine a fatal crash becoming the biggest download on the web or youtube

not good publicity for the ring

so either you need to hide the camera or just accept that nobody will get to see your crap driving !

Another good reason to stay away imo!

Crashes are going to happen, and people are going to video them, and anyone that honestly thinks that's an issue is an idiot. SO let me get this right, it's a "racetrack" where there has never been a single crash or injury/fatality......... Big Brother must be busy these days ;-)

( Camera's are a fact of life now, everything has one on, before that, what a lot of people didn't realise was that human beings had two (yes 2!!) optical rangefinding and situation immaging devices mounted in their skulls, but unfortunately these have ceased to work since the Y2k bug hit most 1st world countries, so now we have to process info with a digital encoder, hence no one actually see's anything live these days, but just through a viewfinder or 3" square lcd...............)

Just seems like another way to make money doesn't it? Loads of people are videoing it on the QT already aren't they?

Sorry just skimmed through the article as I'm at work.
So, they're going to review all the footage? Even if they're fast forwarding through the films, it'll be pretty time-consuming and labour-intensive. Maybe they'll develop automatic crash-recognition software to do it automatically?

A bit strange, in that there seemed to be a difference in his driving between, roughly, the first and second halves of the lap.
The driver's attention seemed to wander at 2:11, at the crest approaching Schwedenkreuz. That came very close to becoming a very ugly scene.

Quite right. All this will do is to encourage people to force that new "personal best", in order to get it on tape. Dodgy overtakes, not yielding to a faster car behind, not easing off into Breidscheid, treating bikes like cars - this is guaranteed to cause accidents.

I noticed that, i think that as the transmission oil heated it became more difficult to select gears accurately, there are a few points where he ends up coasting into corners in neutral! And i think the first half of the video, mainly following the porka, was a lot more measured, then when he gets past he starts overdriving the car a little in his haste to "make good the exit" ... ;-) Cracking video nevertheless !!

I have never really seen the point in the lap recording ban anyway. Most crashes that are filmed are filmed from the viewing area's anyway.
It's just another way that they are trying to make money.

Some did not manage that well there. You can see about 4 different skid marks going off to the left...

Another money making scheme and a really bad idea.

It did make me laugh looking at the new lap prices. You buy x number of laps, then get an amount of money to spend on food! How American.

Excellent lets celebrate the fact they have found another way to 'tax' their visitors. No doubt you'll have to pay using the 'ring card'. Not log before you have to swipe that bloody card to take a dump...
