Chaps
Fairly basic questions:
1) How long do front brake pads typically last (for a non-tracked 997)?
2) How much more wear on the front should I expect compared to the rear – i.e. If the fronts are 100% worn, would the rears normally be expected to be 20%, 50%, 90% worn?
3) How much should an OPC charge for changing the front brake pads i.e. parts plus labour?

No points for any responses which include:
• Get it done by an independent
• Do they really need doing or are the OPC trying to rip you off
• It’s not that difficult you can do it yourself

The price will be on the Porsche menu, when they need doing depends on type of traffic/roads and the specific driver's driving style so the range will be huge (5k to 50k?).

Ratio of front/to rear consumption may be altered by how often the PSM kicks in as this is more likely to brake the rear wheels on a 911 and I believe has resulted in rears wearing before fronts for some drivers (clearly not the most mechanically sympathetic ones wink).

Thanks for this.

Well, the front pads were 75% worn at 30k miles, so should potentially last to around 40k.
Rears were only 30% worn, so plenty of life left.

I’ve noticed a drop-off in braking performance recently, so wondered about getting the front pads changes when the car is in for its 111-point pre-warranty check and having a couple of warranty issues resolved.

If it adds £100-£200 to the bill, then I would probably get it done. If it is £200+ I’ll wait until they NEED to be done!

Get ready for the possibility for discs as well as pads.
Mine were in a pretty bad way at my 111pt check a couple of weeks away - fairly badly corroded. Pads were worn similarly to yours but had been damaged by the corroded discs.
I only mention this because of your comment that you have noticed a drop off in braking performance which is exactly my experience. This isn't one of those "fleeced by the OPC at warranty renewal time" posts.
Braking performance was immediately restored to as I remember it when I first drove the car, I hadn't noticed the gradual worsening until it got to the point where I felt it wasn't right.

Hope it only needs pads in a few thousand miles.

At the free health check-up last year, discs were identified as in excellent condition!

Wear rate may not be uniform if you get your brakes hot - they wear quicker when hot and the less material there is (to absorb the heat the motion is turned into by braking), the quicker they get hot.

It's for this reason that anyone taking a car with 75% worn pads is asking for trouble doing a track day on them, whereas they may be good for a few thousand miles on the road.

Not a C4S but a C2S, front disks and pads chnged at 38k rear's about 50% worn.

Cost £950 at OPC.

You can buy OEM pads from Eurocarparts for about half OPC and pay an indy (I got micheldever tyres to drop in a front set whilst having new rear tyres) for about £35 + VAT. Disks is a whole different ball game but pads and labour came to just over 100 notes.

Just a coincidence I discovered is eurocarparts offering 20% off using code JAN20.

There are some competitive deals with some of the specialist dealers doing disk/pads packages (not got a 997 now but recall Porschapart or Design911 being good) but may be worth comparing with the Eurocarparts list price.

OPC are £186.72 for fronts, Pagid available through Indies at £75.00. Anti squeal pads and sensors soon add up to another £72.00 (all + vat)
