Just updated the fuel gauge thread with the same resulting issue. Fuse blows. Changed 15A fuse - fuel gauge now fixed. Turn on fan, cant hear anything, turn up to 2 and fuse blows straight away frown

It's a September 92 pre-cat with the old style controls (1 speed knob and 2 horizontally mounted window switches for direction and temp).

2 questions - Am i stuffed with the heater fan behind the passanger light pod? I think I know the answer to this....

2nd, is it likely that the fan itself is knackered rather than say the heater matrix? The temp/direction motors work after a fashion but the fan speed definitely blows the fuse.

This was the state of mine. Bracket completely gone & chunks fallen into fan.
It had been sitting in a pool of water for most of its life.
You can check via the headlamp hatch in the wheel arch. (top right)
This is the view through the headlamp hole.

Fan was seized.

That looks comprehensively "worn" smile Did it blow the fuse on any attempt at use in that state?

If mine is knackered is there a like for like upgrade possible in that space? NOt sure the 500 style fan fits or works in there?

No i didnt use it, but guess the fuse would go. Didnt do anything when it was running anyway.
The bracket had 'matured' well. Got it turning again but the bearings had gone. The fan is Delco, but i came across a Bosch 0 130 063 806 from a C reg MK2 Cavalier on e-bay for £20 which looks the same. Not tried it yet as the car is a pile of bits at the moment. I think you can get the motor & hamster wheel fan from Clever Trev for £115

Found some more pics:

If it's working OK on the first speed it'll be the the resistor pack, nowt to do with motors or bearings wink

For clarity I read it that the OP just says 'he can't hear it' on 1, the fuse blows on II, and never mentions full speed.

Many griffs blowers are inaudible unless you walk to the front of the car and know where to listen wink

The heater fan had seized solid on my Chim last year, resulting in blown fuses.

I got it out and un-seized it (lots of WD40 wink ) and it's still working to this day.

Thx for replies. The fuse didn't pop until I moved it from low speed to 2. I can't be sure whether it was working on the lowest setting thinking about it.

Excuse my ignorance but whether it's resister pack or the fan itself I presume it's all in the same place? Be interested to know if the Ford or Vauxhall units are the same as it sounds alot cheaper that way...

Disconnect the multiplug at the heater first (you can just do that via the wheelarch access panel IIRC) to check it's not a harness wiring fault. Just run the blower switch at 1/2/3 & make sure the fuse doesn't blow. You don't want the aggro of getting the blower out to find the fault is elsewhere wink
