TDI poor starting /initial running
Discussion
Just had me camshaft and followers changed @170k.
Car runs great when warm, but it is proving to be a little slow to start up, (always does first time mind you), but then shudders and judders, little power, for about a couple of minutes, then clears up and like said runs sweetly. On re-start during the day, it's fine, unless it really cools down again, (so that the temp guage drops to cold), then can be tempremental again for a few seconds. Also the mpg had dropped by about 10mpg.
After a camshaft replacement, should something, (fuel pump/timing), be set up on the PD engine. Diesel specialist Indy did the work, just wondering if he's missed something.
No signs of any fuel leakage, so isn't that.
Car is Bora PD 150.

Yep, the glow plug light comes on for the usual 10secs or so,then goes out, same as when I first got the car 5 years ago. No other engine management lights come on either, so no faults being picked up.
Thought about the battery, but once started doesn't a diesel just run on compression ?
Just came back from a extended run and the car runs great, but suspect tomorrow morning the same will happen, for a minute of so then clear up.
On thing I did do is check the mpg, and it works out, in proper terms to be about 46 mpg mixed driving, which will be about right, but computor showing 36mpg. It is normally acurrate to about 2 mpg. So why is the computer all of a sudden reading low ?
Any more thoughts, Tame Tech, have you come across these sort of symptoms ?

Cats, Lambda sensor?
Pretty sure the PD engines don't have lamda control.OP - Even if the MIL light isn't on there still could be error codes logged. It could be a fault with the MAF. Might be worth getting the codes scanned. I am not sure how the onboard computer calculates the MPG but if the MAF or any other sensor is giving duff readings it could effect the calculation
True the battery isn't used to run an ignition system but batterys loose their effectiveness over time and are unable to provide a high enough current drawn by the starter.
I'm out of ideas, over to you TT

I've had a word with the indy, and he is happy that he set the injector timing OK, and is going to have a look tomorrow for me. He's starting with the glow plugs.
Started the car this morning, was a bit sluggish, but fired up 2-3rd turn, bit lumpy then quickly settled down. I allowed it to idle for a few minutes this time then drove off, car drove normally, but is still showing low mpg on the comp. Will check this again manually too.
To add to the confusion, I got a STOP...CHECK COOLANT warning, which does the usual, and cancels when I turn the ignition on/off, it's usually to do with the sensor in the header bottle, which usually needs a clean, happens when the outside temp in a bit cold, which it was last night.

Quick update, the stop-coolant light is not an issue, not coming on anymore post clean.
New g/plugs fitted. Car still displaying the bad initial running symptoms, then clearing up and running sound for the rest of the day. Have run several real life mpg tests, all show the car to be doing 46-47'ish mpg over mixed conditions, whereas the computer indicates 40-41'ish.

Well car back from the stealers, and the diagnosis was.......new temp sensor, (thanks to the last poster for that suggestion, spot on), and needed new tandem pump, leaking, presumably why the mpg was showing low.
So I'll update tomorrow after first cold start, but was running like a dream on the way home. Mind you, it should be after all the work done recently.

First cold start after the work at the stealers, and.........complete bag of nails, alot worse than it has been all week. Straight back to the stealers and managed a word with the tech. Going back in and they are looking at the timing, as the probs only really started after the cam/followers were changed, and I know the garage that did it, do not have the diagnostic software. Tech reckons that the timing needs to be spot on after the cambelt has been off the sprockets, and alot of places don't lock the cam/crank with the proper tools. Car, once warm on the way to the stealers, and for the rest of the day, ran like it did when new, bags of power and mid range oommph, really quite too, but this first start thing is getting to be a real PITA, as I'm planning to move the car on, starting to cost too much.
