Afternoon all,

Out of interest, does anybody have a rough indication of how much per annum a full time chauffeur would cost?

I see so many in London I was just curious to know how much it costs...

According to The Payscale Report, chauffeur salaries for drivers in full-time employment range from £19,636 to £29,957 (UK, 2009).

Full-time as in live on location, on call 24hrs per day?. Seems too low to me, but I suppose it suits OAPs or someone who doesn't have a family to support.

Would the client have to buy the car and keep it in good order?

Quite surprising really.

I'd have thought it would have been in the region of 50-60k for a full time chauffeur, a relative bargain at £30k a year. I imagine for those kind of figures the client would need to supply the car and maintain it?

My Dad had a customer who was a chauffeur for a local businessman.

He was basically a driver for the whole family.

They had a Range Rover, which he would tool the family and himself about in, and also a nice Jag (this was at least 15 years ago)

It was when his boss upgraded to a Bentley Turbo R that I really paid attention and got talking to him about what a cushy number he had driving this Bentley around all day.

He said it wasn't an awful job, but the major drawback was him being more-or-less on call

Party in London? That's your Saturday afternoon gone driving them down there, your entire evening waiting around for them until 1am, then driving back.

Emergency meeting up North? 4am start please

Visiting friends? 'Servants' quarters or a stty hotel for you.

He didn't mind so much to begin with but it seriously messes with any family or social life you might have.

He was lucky that he progressed into it from doing other jobs for his boss. The trust takes a while. People won't just let you jump into their £200k Bentley and start hooning.

You also have to be friendly but still an employee and able to get the car to places others can't, faster than you should.

Are you having a laugh?
£55K per year works out to £6.27 per hour to be on call 24 hours a day, 365 days per year.

How much is your time worth?

You need to be making a lot of journeys or really want to be driven in your own car for a chauffeur to make more financial sense then a smart cab company like Addison Lee
