The CLS 55 AMG seem to as low as £20k now, which seems like very good VFM....

I am looking at them as a replacement for my 997 which is proving to be impractical in terms of seats....

So, what are your thoughts/experiences of this mighty Benz?.......

They sound awesome.....sorry, that's all I know. (was playing golf at PGA Catalunya a few years back when one went past on the E route at several hundred leptons).

for me cls55 would be at the top of the list, i have an sl55 but I have been in a cls55 and I love the car, if I needed back seats which I will do in future then I would buy a cls55 or an early cls63, both are incredible and I think I saw a cls63 for sale couple of weeks back for 25k which is great value, the distinguishing feature of the cls are the incredible looks - I'm sure everyone can remember back to when they first saw one on the road

only other options are E60 M5 and older rs6. I think the merc is classier, more powerful, and looks the best by a mile. rs6 looks like any other audi and M5 is ugly, In fact I think the cls is one of the best looking merc's, a friend of mine is getting married soon and is thinking of using a cls to escort him to the wedding hall - enough said!

Another to consider is an RS4 but it is more cramped inside and not as thrilling to drive, mate of mine bought a quattroporte couple of months back-these are also great value at 20k and sound equally incrediblesmile and I loved the interior too(better than merc),

I was just about to start a similar thread this evening and someone has beaten me to it!

I have been looking to buy a cls 55 amg or cls 63 amg for 2-3 months now after having test driven both last year. The 55 has 30+ less horse power but more torque as it is a super charged engine vs naturaly aspirated v8 on the 63 so feels slightly more rapid especially in the 30-50 50-70 intervals, however this may be deceptive as the 63 is very slightly faster to 0-60. There is never more than 0.2 seconds in it though. I got the feeling that the 63's performance benefit was at much higher speeds like 120 mph plus which are of course not practical or advisable on the UK roadssmile

The down side for me with both is that for me they seemed to lack a bit of presence and perhaps blended in a bit too well. I'm not sure how much further they will depreciate this year, going by the number of cars in the low 20's showing up as far as the 55's are concerned, they will continue to drop.

Although there is no shortage of cars coming up for sale (3-4+ listed on autotrader and/or piston heads in the past few weeks alone) it has so far been a frustrating search for me probably because I have quite a specific criteria. Although I have a flexible budget and am certainly not looking for a bargain I can't seem to find a obsidian black car with cashmere beige leather and a top spec (tv/dvd/phone/keyless go/massage/heated/ventilated seats etc). If anyone here happens to have a 55 or 63 black with cashmere beige leather and reasonable miles and might be interested in selling please let me know- I can save you the hassle and expense of listing and will pay a more than fair price.

The only car with this combination of spec I have seen was listed on this site very oddly for just 20k even though it has a huge spec and was only 50k, I was travelling that week though and it was sold before I could arrange to have a look at it.

Did anyone from the board end up buying that car? It was being sold by a place called carrington cars or something similar.

If I can't find what I'm looking for I am tempted to just wait a year and get a cl63 amg which is at the moment 20k more expensive than a 07 high spec cls63 but to me is easily the most spectacular mercedes without going into the silly money (for a car) category.

Chad...the lack of presence is certainly a point, as is the fact that the interior /dash are soo outdated compared to modern offerings...

BUT....the interior on my 997 is no show stopper, and for £20k, I cant think of another car that has this amount of power in a sexy-ish looking package,

True at 20k there is nothing that comes close as far as speed/looks/daily driveability and also for the type of car it is reasonable running costs.

However I think the 20k price is a bit deceptive. Yes, there are examples at 20k, but in my opinion a low miles, big spec well cared for car in the right colour is realisticaly 23k-25k+. Even a couple of thousand more than that is not that unreasonable for the right 55 or possibly 63 If you intend to keep the car medium to long term.

The car I mentioned in my first post seems to be the exeption to the rule, at 20k for the spec and miles to me at the time it looked suspicious low priced- shame I missed out!

What sort of color/spec are you after?

From the test drive of the 63 and also from a friends 55, the other downside to me was the lack of space. I'm just under 6ft so hardly a giant but it still felt cramped in the front, and the back seats while okay for a short journey were even worse. Two adults in there would be uncomfortable in my opinion even for a short journey.

I'm not sure what back space is like in a 997 but would be very surprised if the cls offered much of a benefit there.

The 55 engines in the e55 and cls55 were 'underrated' in terms of bhp/performance figures as not to overshadow the sl55, however the engines and power are identical as has been checked by dyno's (e55 is actually faster then an sl55 to 60 as lighter),

so the bhp difference between 55 and 63 engines is only around 10bhp but there is a 50ftlb difference in torque, hence cls55 will be faster than cls63 in any low speed run except past 120mph as you have correctly stated and 'feels faster' too,

I have been looking for a black car with a light interior and it appears that only the odd one was ever made. If you want that size engine it seems as though you have to accept a dark interior and for me that is a step too far.

They are definitely much rarer than black with black leather.

They do pop up every now and again though- there was one for sale on piston heads with cashmere beige leather recently. It was well priced too considering the very low miles. Unfortunately it had a terrible spec with basically nothing at all other than than the command/sat nav. There is actually one for sale at the moment but it's priced at 40k and has a very average spec!

I agree regarding the black leather, does not look anywhere near as good as beige.

Still can't belive there was a car advertised here with the beige leather and huge spec in January for a ridiculously low 20k and I missed out due to not being in the UK that week.

If anyone bought it and want's to make a quick profit please let me know...happy to give you a very good margin!

Hi,

I was ironically looking to make the switch the other way round, cls55 to 997!. I recently bought a beautiful tansanite blue cls55, and its been brilliant beyond all expectations, sure it wont handle anything like a 997, but for a 2 ton beast its pretty impressive, and the airmatic delivers an almost unbelievable ride!. I too was after an black car with beige interior, and ended up with grey leather certainly brighter than black. I was pretty adamant about the interior colour, but having lived with both interiors, i cant say i really care. re space, im also 6ft ish and find the space fine, the feeling of 'crampdness' possibly a result of the high dash and window line?. Also interior wise, although slightly dated, is imo streets ahead of the 997. imho the only essential options are the HK sound, blutooth phone and self closing boot.

i am selling now simply because i dont seem to be using the rear seats, and, truth be told, its actually too powerful for london!. coming from bmw's and porkers i miss wringing out an engine rather than having a mostly unusable 500bhp, 13mpg sledgehammer. it really will be missed.

px perhaps??

Very nice car, it's rare to see a blue one makes a nice change from the 99% black and silver.

Does anyone know why the cashmere beige leather is so rare?

Did it cost more than black or is it just not as popular?

Eeither way it will be a long wait to find a high spec low miles black car with beige leather so I may have to compromise unless I want to wait 6 months...

Thanks,

i had exactly the same dilema, and decided to hold out for spec, however, when i saw this i just knew i had to have it, as you say the colour really makes it stand out. seems to attract alot more attention than black or silver. only things its missing is keyless go, thought id miss it, i really dont, and tv which is largely pointless without a digital tuner

i also found that there a fair few bad examples out there. I had this checked out by a well renowned specialist before buying, and its mint!.

Agreed!! I've just been cruising in the sl55 today and cannot think of any other car under 50k that could put such a big smile on my face, biggrin, put the car in second (manual mode) at around 10-20mph and floor it, 60-70mph comes in what feels like only 2-3 secs eek!!!

the 55 kompressor engines are surely one of the greatest ever engines, period

Hi all. I have had this great specced silver metallic CLS 55 AMG for awhile and it has been brilliant. I have spent time and money getting it into a mint condition. Brand new service, wheels refurbed and detailed inside, soon to be detailed outside too.

£17600!!!

I was in a similar position to Turboman. Waited months for the right combination CLS AMG - obsidian black, cashmere leather, fmbsh, all the kit etc. But there comes a point at which you've got to accept that there just aren't that many around and so you have to compromise.

Luckily I found my (near) perfect car last week at Mercedes Benz Retail in Birmingham. It's got the black bodywork and cashmere leather (looks great) with Comand, linguatronic, multi CD add 4 zone climate. I would have dismissed this one in the past as it didn't have massage seats, TV and the 19 inch alloys, but like I said, you could wait forever to get your perfect spec. Besides, coming from a 'proper' Merc dealer, this one had just 40,000 miles, a full Mercedes 12 month warranty plus Mobilo and Accident assistance services thrown in. I never expected to get all this for just £23k.

I've had it a week now and I'm blown away by the looks, the kit and the performance (in another league to the Esprit Turbo and S-Type R I used to own). I would definitely hold out for light leather but the lack of massage seats and a TV is no big deal (it plays DVDs) and the 18 inch alloys look amazing. The only negative is the insurance - a nightmare £1350 and that's with 15 years ncb!

Good luck with the hunt!
