Well, im certain a large majority of you will not believe this. I had a little play on confused.com tonight. I am now 20 with 3 years no claims bonus. Firstly i tried insuring myself on a 2004 911 turbo s. Cheapest quote was £10,911. I then tried insuring myself for when i will be 21 with 4 years no claims bonus. I was shocked to find that my cheapest quote was now and i kid you not £869.65. A drop of 10 grand!! For one year!!

I then tried a lamborghini gallardo in the same manner. At my current age of 20 i didnt even get a quote. When i am 21 it would be £2862.45.

This not only shows the ridiculous difference a year makes when you turn 21 but also that insurance on decent metal for young drivers is attainable if your criteria is right. Please bear in mind that these quotes included the addition of two older named drivers which always seems to make the quote far cheaper, as well as a £1000 excess, 5k pa.

I await the shouts of liar...

Consider it done.

Seeing as confused has quoted me, third party, £961 on a 2000 2.2 Vectra, with 4 years no claims and 24 years of age.

Lies!

My insurance has gone up each year since I've passed. At 21 I was paying £1100 for an Golf R32, but at 23 (0 claims, 0 points) I was paying the exact same amount in an Audi S3 despite having an extra couple of years driving experience and additional NCB. I recently phoned up MoreThan (current insurers) to transfer my policy over to a Mazda RX-8, expecting it to be sub £750. The price actually went up by a few quid!

So as it stands, I had cheaper insurance with a high-risk R32 a few years ago than I do now with some poncey hairdressers car which is worth less, common as muck and two insurance groups lower.

I live in a decent area and have been driving for 6 years with no accidents or points. Insurance premiums seem to be just plucked out of the air for the most part.

Summary: Age doesn't mean a thing to insurers anymore, they'll charge you whatever they like.

Yes, I've been surprised with insurance quotes before, when I had my first years no claims it saved me £1250 on the projected quotes at the time. When I look at what people older than me are paying for 1.0L shopping trolleys these days, I weep for the state the insurance industry is in. It's as corrupt as the banking sector. I am only glad I've been able to get good deals as I've went along!

Admiral can and does give good quotes for 996 911 Turbos. I remember trying them out also when I was in my mid 20s for random quotes. Found one of the most difficult things to insure was a BMW M3 (E36 and E46) triple the price of a 911 turbo most of the time.

What does the quote engine say if you change from a 996 Turbo S, to a 997 GT3 worth say £65k out of interest?

i did exactly the same thing the other day but with my clio. Driving 6 months without any points or ncb they wanted just shy of 5k fully comp. I then changed it to when im 18 in 6 months with a years ncb and been driving a year it it went down to £1100 fully comp!

Sometimes they'll say the quote is wrong and cancel it. Sounds too cheap. But, if you can afford a Turbo or Lambo at 21 you can afford insurance wink

I get around £2k for any of my next cars (Lotus Elise S1, TVR Chim, Porsche Boxter...). None of those are a 911...Not quite sure how you managed that, unless its a 0 miles policy?

Thats probably the other reason. No 21 year olds have crashed a lambo, because noone is stupid enough to buy one for them...And presumably Saudi Princes use someone other than Admiral! As a result, they see no accident frequency on their computer for your age bracket?

Highly possible. I will try a 911 GT3 now!

GT3 = £1360 again with admiral.

not going to go shout but - I bet if you phoen them up , check details "this quote seems to be incorrect" if you take it online it will no doubt be wrong and be cancelled when auditted 6 weeks later.

You are projecting that you will pay on a Porsche 996 the same as a 22 yr old in bradford pays on a clio 1.2 or a 53 plate fiesta ..... please check - they are probably just not quoting the full risk as it has no template to work on. no stats = random scrabble score not real quote.

why is everyone shouting liar, everyones circumstances are remarkably different. I am 20 with 2 years no claims but i can insure a golf GTI for 1000 pounds,

in the same manner, i tried what the OP did and the porsche came out at £1265

so everyone calling BS etc may live in a city, or in a poor postcode well known for Anti social behaviour or carjackings....

So what you are telling me is a 21 year old, 4 years NCB insuring an '04 Turbo S is less of a risk than a 28 year old Accountant, 3 years NCB insuring an '06 GTI?

You must have the safest postcode in the world, with your car under armed guard, non?

Post code does make a massive difference. I haven't tried that for a while, I can insure a Gallardo for under a grand, now (I'm 30). hehe
