Porsche Cayman S Black Revealed

More power, and lots of 'black' for £50k (and the rest...) special

Porsche has revealed this £50,420 Cayman S Black Edition, which apart from looking rather stylish in glossy er, black, totes an extra 10hp and lots of goodies in its kitbag.

Key features are a 3.4-litre flat-six engine tuned to deliver 330 hp, distinctive 19" Boxster Spyder alloy wheels finished in black and a luxurious interior, they tell us. Production is limited to 500 examples worldwide, and UK sales begin in September.

The extra power is produced at 7,400 rpm (an additional 200 rpm vs the standard car), while the maximum torque remains unchanged at 370Nm at 4,750 rpm. Acceleration to 62 mph is improved by a tenth to 5.1 seconds with the six-speed manual transmission, and to 5.0 seconds with the optional PDK. Spend a bit more on the PDK Sport Chrono package, and you can shave the time to 4.8 seconds.

The top speed of the Cayman S Black Edition is just one mph faster than that of the Cayman S - 173 mph with the manual transmission and 172 mph with PDK.
The car gets standard Bi-Xenon headlights with dynamic cornering lights and LED daytime running lights, together with automatic anti-dazzle interior and exterior mirrors with integrated rain sensor.

The front seats are trimmed in black partial leather with a Porsche crest on the headrests, as well as a Sport Design steering wheel. Climate control and cruise control are fitted, as is Porsche Communication Management incorporating satellite navigation and lots of 'connectivity'.

The colour scheme is carried over to the dashboard trim in black, as well as the gear lever/selector trim and the dials in the instrument cluster - and you get a limited edition badge on the glove box.

looks absolutely stunning, but 50k + options is quite a lot of money!

And yet all will get sold, so it's the right amount of money.. Clever Porsche releases yet another version smile.

I still don't understand why Porsche keep making these tiny changes and calling it a special edition??

If they're going to do a limited run special, in my books it needs to have something properly special about it. Like 100 more horsepower, a 10k rev limit or KERs or something.. 10bhp?! what's the bloody point?!

Because it will be commercially successful for Porsche

Surely it looks the same as a standard one in black? The point is, this is a pretty well boggo Cayman S with a few tweeks. I'm not saying the Cayman isn't a great car - my father used to have one and I'd rate it above the 911. The point is I think this is yet another flimsey excuse for a 'special' edition. Honestly who are the mugs that buy these things? I'd much rather buy a Cayman S with a few option boxes ticked, then pop down to Techart and create something really special!

All IMHO of course smile

To be honest I'm not a big fan, I love Porsche's, but this strikes me as, dare I say it, a bit chavvy...

I really never would have a black car, great in the showroom, crap for the rest of time.

Glad to see the power climbing 10Bhp per specialist addition, it must be VERY political in Porsche land.

I wouldn't call anyone who buys this a mug. Far from it. If you are looking at getting a new Cayman S, IMO you would be better to get this than to get a standard one and pay for all the optional extras that come as standard on this one. You also get the HP increase (albeit a small one) from the Cayman R. Though not a particularly special special edition, just 500 of them world wide would make it retain its value a little better - the Cayman S Sport and Design Editions still hold a bit of a premium over the regular Gen1 S.

I also think keeping it looking standard is a good thing. It is a special edition S, not a new model designation like the R was. I certainly wouldn't want it to look like anything Techart create.

It's an expensive car. The Cayman S is £47,600 new and when you add on the options that come as standard on this one it is very easy to push it up beyond the price of this edition. When you consider the base cost of a standard S, it doesn't seem like bad value to me.

Shame one can only get it in pimp black. What is it with cars in pimped stealth colours with blacked out windows. Are we all aspiring to be crypto-drug dealers?

Lotus does it, Caterham does it, even Opel/Vauxhall do it. Hell, all producers do it someway somehow... I guess they learned the "black stuff" from AMG...
