Star of the British round of the FIA GT Championship at Silverstone on 15 May 2005 will be the new Aston Martin DBR9, making its UK debut.
The Tourist Trophy will be the DBR9’s second race, after a successful debut at the 12 hours of Sebring on 19 March (see story link below). The organisers of the centenary event are eager to see if Aston Martin Racing can build upon its promising return to motor sport.
Aston Martin is going head to head with a list that reads like a who’s who in motor racing. To win the centenary Tourist Trophy the DBR9 team will have to fight off the might of Ferrari, Maserati, Corvette, Porsche and Lamborghini. “It is wonderful to see Aston Martin return to the world of motor racing and the Tourist Trophy offers the perfect stage for its UK debut,” said George Kennedy, Secretary of the race organiser Royal Automobile Club.
“This season of the FIA GT Championship sees the return of two world renowned names of motor racing – Aston Martin and the Tourist Trophy. Together they will create a motor racing experience to remember and it is fantastic to see a British team competing for this great British trophy. But they have got to deal with some of the biggest names in motoring including Chevrolet and Ferrari, so I’m sure the atmosphere will be electric as the competition comes to a head.”
AM Racing’s team principal George Howard-Chappell said, “We are delighted to be making our UK debut at Silverstone in the centenary year of the Tourist Trophy which has such a rich heritage. We were pleased with our class win at Sebring but it must be emphasised that this is still very much a test and development year for the DBR9.”
