The 2003 series of the British GT Championship should will see a number of
changes that should help to regain credibility amongst the viewing public.
The 11 round Championship will feature a standard race length of 75 minutes
to increase the amount of track time for teams, drivers and spectators and to
recognise the 75th Anniversary year of the BRDC. Typically the races will start at 2:30pm on the Sunday.
The BRDC are also considering the option of introducing of several
longer/variable style races: - Castle Combe/Knockhill 2 x 40 mins “Supersprints”,
a 2 hour race at Snetterton and a 3 hour dusk race at Silverstone for the
British Empire Trophy. Also under consideration is a Spa 1000km race.
The Open GT class is to remain and cars will be able to run to 2002
regulations. The performance between GT and GTO cars is to be equalised through
pit stops.
The most exciting news though is the new entry level British GT Cup class.
This is a class for high-performance sports cars running below GTO specification
and will allow manufacturers to enter cars that the man in the street will
recognise.
The class will encompass Porsche Cup cars, Ferrari and TVR one-make
championship cars, other potential vehicle types could even include Audi TTs,
Vauxhall VX220s, Morgan Aeros, Lotus Elise and BMW M3s.
Performance will be equalised by close technical control based around the
power to weight ratio of each car.
