For the third year running Rye House will host this year's karting for charity event in aid of CLIC (Challenging Cancer and Leukaemia in Childhood). In addition, investment bank Dresdner Kleinwort Wasserstein will, very kindly, be matching money raised, up to £1,000. As ever with these things, the aim is to raise more than last year.
According to organiser Myles Packman, there will be the usual smattering of professional racing drivers, including McLaren Formula One test driver and International F3 star Lewis Hamilton, and reigning Formula Renault Champion & F3 driver Mike Conway -- as well as a few (very) minor celebs and page 3 girls.
The format this year will be a 20 minute practice session followed by a two hour race with between two and five drivers per team. Individual entries welcome if you don't mind being put into a random team.
The karts are identical twin-engined, 70mph Pro-Karts (which despite the name are very easy to drive). Pictures from the 2003 event can be found on PHer Ben Pike's site (link below).
Up and coming photographer Matt Watkinson of Gravynet (link below) fame will be there taking photos all night which will then be available to purchase, with all proceeds going to CLIC.
Rye House is one of the longest and best outdoor circuits in the UK at just over 1km and is conveniently located just up the A10 from London (five minutes from J25 of the M25). There is also a regular service from Liverpool Street to Rye House Station.
The circuit will supply everything needed for the race, all you need to do is turn up. There's a maximum of 25 teams and the first eight have already been filled. The plan is to auction the last five teams for charity as happened last year. There's even talk of auctioning off PistonHeads boss PetrolTed...
If you are interested in putting a team together or joining a team, contact Myles Packman (address below).
Cost per team is the same as last year at £199 and, as last year, there will be an assortment of fines (all in the name of charity).
