Young Marmalade, a company specialising in motoring insurance for younger drivers, has just done a survey revealing that 44 per cent of young drivers could be driving with invalid insurance.
The culprits are driving their car as a named driver on a policy in their parents’ name believing that their insurance is valid despite them being the main driver in reality. The technique, known as ‘fronting’, has been occurring for years, but as premiuns rise it's an increasingly tempting option for younger drivers.
Based on the survey, the company estimates that every year an additional 150,000 new drivers are breaking the law.
There are moves afoot to tackle the issue – in September, Kall Kwik cancelled 800 policies fo people believed to be doing this.
