Having already claimed the MX-5 is an Icon with a special edition model this summer, Mazda has decided to re-establish itself as a world record holder.
In May 2000, Mazda’s MX-5 was given the record for being the world's top selling lightweight, open-top, two-seat sports car for total sales of 531,890 since launch some 11 years earlier.
However, as of this year Mazda has shifted a fair few more than that – the running total currently stands at over 800,000 - so they’re reapplying for their own record.
All of this comes nearly 18 years after the MX-5 was first released, which means that they’ve sold a staggering 44444.4 MX-5s every year and a bewildering 121.8 every day since the 1989 launch.
