Bio Aston won last time out
With five different winners in the first five races, and with eight manufacturers represented on the grid and more set to join later in the year, the 2007 Avon Tyres British GT Championship is one of the most closely contested major race series in the UK.
Rounds Six & Seven take place on the full Brands Hatch Grand Prix circuit this weekend (14th and 15th July) with a mouth watering line up of Porsches, Ferraris, Vipers, Moslers, a Lamborghini, Aston Martins and Ascaris, with Morgan, Ferrari and Porsche being represented in the GTC class.
At Snetterton last month the Barwell Aston Martin DBRS9 of Jonny Cocker and Paul Drayson made UK motorsport history by becoming the first bio fuel car to win a major championship race in this country. Will they be able to repeat the feat this weekend? Both of the team’s sister cars, with Guy Harrington, Ben de Zille Butler, Michael Bentwood and Tom Alexander, have been race winners this season, so expect a three way battle between the 6litre V12 powered machines at the front of the field.
Brit GT is providing great racing this year
Hector Lester and Tim Mullen scored the first win of the year at Oulton Park at Easter but have been out of luck since. Lester is joined this weekend by the rapid Dane Allan Simonsen after the Ferrari showed it had the race pace at Snetterton last month until mechanical woes.
The Tech 9 Porsche 997 of Matt Harris and Oliver Bryant was the Round 2 winner and since the Oulton Park race has struggled for race pace. Could Brands Hatch see a return to form by the Liverpool based team?
The Team Modena Lamborghini Gallardo made its British GT debut at Snetterton and despite gearbox problems that limited the teams pre-race track time the car with Adam Jones and Rob Wilson at the wheel finished 4th and broke the British GT lap record at the circuit.
The Team RPM Viper of Bradley Ellis and Alex Mortimer will be looking for that elusive win on Ellis’s home circuit. The 20-year-old from Croydon had an impressive FIA GT3 debut for Team RPM at Monza three weeks ago, leading the first race of the weekend before eventually finishing second. The Moore Racing Viper of Paul Fenton and Mike Gardiner is gaining ground on the leaders after a 6th place finish at Snetterton and the team is also hosting the PH Fan Forum this weekend.
Can the Vipers triumph at Brands?
There are two Mosler MT900’s taking part at Brands. The Eclipse run car of Craig and Elliot Cole led for the majority of the 2-hour race at Snetterton before a suspension failure put them out of the race. The Rollecentre Mosler of Kevin Riley and Ian Flux is also due to take to the grid following on from ‘Fluxie’s’ pole position and demon drive in the first race of the weekend last season.
Round Six of the 2007 Avon Tyres British GT Championship is due to start at 16:50 on Saturday 14th July, with the second 60-minute encounter on Sunday at 13:55.
