Gatso cameras appear more controversial than effective
A man who believed he was flashed by a speed camera and then cut down the camera has been jailed for two months.
Richard Atkinson from Derbyshire was scared he’d get a fine and three penalty points so came back to the camera with a step ladder and a circular saw to chop it down - causing £8,000-worth of damage.
He then put the Gatso in the back of his car, drove it home and ditched the device in his garden. Unfortunately, witnesses took down his registration number and contacted police.
Chief Inspector Andrew Charlton, of Nottinghamshire Police, said: “Atkinson’s actions were irresponsible and extreme to say the least. His behaviour could potentially have led to an accident on that stretch of road.”
Atkinson was jailed after admitting a charge of perverting the cause of justice.
Funnily enough, he wasn’t actually caught speeding.
