The Avon Tyres British GT Championship makes a welcome return to Thruxton for the first time since May 2005 and with a grid boasting in excess of 18,000 horsepower.
This season GT3 has replaced GT2 as the main championship class, a decision that has proven to be extremely popular with teams and drivers.
The new GT3 format has provided the setting for the closest ever battle for the 2007 British GT driver’s title, with six different winners from eight races and just six points separating the top eleven drivers.
Currently leading the championship is the Team RPM Viper of Bradley Ellis and Alex
Mortimer. The 2-hour race at Silverstone proved to be frustrating for them. A low grid position was compensated for by a charge through the field by Ellis, who was caught out by a wheel problem during a pitstop, losing them precious places. Once back on track (after a quick driver change) Mortimer brought the car home in 6
place, maintaining their lead by the slimmest of margins.
Their main opposition at Thruxton will undoubtedly come from the trio of Barwell Motorsport Aston Martin DBRS9s. All three have tasted the victory champagne this year and the long sweeps of the 2.4-mile Thruxton circuit should suit their V12 6-litre supercar.
David and Godfrey Jones have scored points in every round this season and their Team Eurotech Preci Spark Ascari KZ1R has been one of the fastest cars on the track.
The Tech 9 Porsche 997 of Matt Harris and Tom Ferrier showed a return to form at Silverstone after the team added the new aero kit to Stuttgart’s finest.
The VRS Motor Finance Ferrari 430 of Adam Wilcox and Phil Burton scored their first podium at Silverstone, finishing just behind the CiM Ferrari but they have been unlucky not to have scored more top 3 finishes this year.
