Great car...but wave goodbye to £7,000
OK, you don't need us to tell you that new cars depreciate, we PHers know more about this than most.
When we read a report by uSwitch.com however we were surprised just how much you can lose as the shiny suited salesman waves you off the forecourt.
The Ford Focus is the UK's best selling car- the 1.8 Style to be exact. Buy one of these at £14,622 and you will lose a staggering £7,066 (48%) in the first year- thats almost enough to buy a new KA Studio! In fact, all of the top ten best sellers lose at least £6,000 in the first year.
Good news though. Green types who buy the Prius Spirit at £20,677 (!) lose £9,348 in the first year, so when you next see the driver of one of those looking smug you now have another reason to laugh at them.
So what mainstream car should you buy to retain the most value? A BMW 325D SE coupe which loses only 25% or £7,753 in the first year. It's not a bad car either, but still nearly 8 grand is a hefty chunk to lose.
