Government projections state that there will be 5.7 million more cars on the road in twenty years. This would increase the overall traffic load by 30 per cent. A spokesman from the Campaign for Better Transport has said that the government needs to fight this increase by improving public transport.
The executive director of the Campaign for Better Transport, Stephen Joseph, said the government need to 'give people and businesses better alternatives to driving.' His recommendations include investment in the rail network, improvement of bus services, and reducing fares for public transport.
The Department of Transport predicts that car ownership will rise to 33.5m by 2031, up from the present 27.8m. The RAC Foundation has criticised Mr Joseph's proposals, saying that his assumption that 'car is bad, train is good' is misguided. They want to see transport improvements for everyone, including road users.
