Insurance firms are likely to take a grim view of drivers caught smoking behind the wheel, according to an insurance website.
They face significant hikes in their insurance premiums with some companies even refusing to cover them, says Confused.com.
The firms will take issue with drivers who are caught and receive a driving without due care and attention conviction which leads to three points on their licence and a £60 fine.
The site warns that drivers who had a smoking related conviction may find it difficult to renew their cover.
A spokeswoman for the site said: “Driving without due care and attention is taken very seriously by insurers and this is reflected in the amount by which premiums rise.
"As changes to the Highway Code have only recently been introduced, only time will tell which insurers increase or decrease the level to which they penalise those caught smoking while driving."
