This could be the Mini's worst nightmare
This may look like a last-hoorah sporting version of the ageing VW Polo hammering around the Nürburgring but it’s not – it’s the new Audi A1.
The fact Audi has already put a Polo body on it and begun ringing its neck around the 'Ring will also give you an idea of this small car’s sporting intentions.
The A1 is one of the company’s most important upcoming cars and a stab at the Mini market, with versions to rival both the Cooper and Cooper S.
The A1 was unveiled in the form of the Metroproject Quattro at the Tokyo Motor Show last week and it looks like Audi are wasting no time getting the thing ready for the showrooms.
The car you see here is thought to be testing out a Quattro system, a pointer that the A1 could be seen in S1 guide with up to 200bhp and flared wheel arches.
The equipment hanging off the side of this car, which wears the Polo GTI Cup bodykit, is to monitor what all four wheels are doing.
The A1 is believed to be sharing its platform with the next A3 and may undercut the Mini on price.
Expect a five-door version and possibly coupe and convertible models, as well as the obvious diesels.
The A1 is expected to go on sale in 2009.
