If anyone can make hybrids cool it's Henrik Fisker
To any car fan, the word hybrid is pretty much the automotive equivalent of counting sheep; often conjuring images of a very dull Toyota transporting some very smug celebrity to some awards ceremony or other.
However, Henrik Fisker is attempting to change these perceptions with the launch of this pretty spectacular new creation.
Having made his name penning Astons, then turning his attention to creating coachbuilt specials based on BMW and Mercedes chassis, Fisker has now created a completely new company to look after this new project: Fisker Automotive.
According to the man himself: “We want people to drive beautiful fast cars that make environmental sense – cars that are eco-chic and will have less of an impact on global warming.”
The venture is actually a joint effort between the existing coachbuilding operation and Quantum Technologies, who are responsible for the hybrid drivetrain.
Currently, Fisker and Quantum are well underway with development of the first car, which will probably use a development of Quantum’s existing plug-in hybrid system.
Details about the car’s performance are to be confirmed, but we do know that the car will be launched at the Detroit Autoshow in 2008, and production versions should start at under $100,000. Fisker plans to shift 15,000 upmarket hybrids a year.
