Chucking a load more power, cylinders and capacity into the latest German über-saloon is starting to become ever so slighlty predictable.
But according to reports Audi is about to do the unthinkable - downsize the 4.2 litre V8 in the S4 to a V6 for the next-generation model.
The German firm is said to have been listening to purists who believe the normally-aspirated V8, despite being recognised as one of the greatest engines ever created, has no place in a fast Audi.
They argue an Audi trademark is a forced-induction engine and as a result the company is now considering going back to a V6, this time in 3.0 litre guise, reports website Fourtitude.
It is thought the V8 is considered by many customers to be more in tune with a GT, such as the new S5.
For this reason it is rumoured Audi is now developing a six-cylinder forced-induction engine for the new S4.
It is not clear whether the new engine will have one or two turbos, with some reports suggesting a supercharger.
If that’s not unusual enough there is even talk of using VAG’s ‘twin charger’ technology and going for both.
The new S4 is expected in just under a year with just over 300 bhp.
