Malaysian car firm Proton is planning to develop an ‘Islamic car’ for Muslim drivers, it has been reported.
The vehicle would have special features such as a dedicated space to keep a copy of the Koran and a headscarf, as well as a compass pointing to Mecca.
Proton is said to be considering teaming up with manufacturers in Iran and Turkey to work on the new car.
Officials in Iran are believed to have originally suggested the idea for the unique vehicle.
Proton believes there is a huge gap in the market for a Muslim car and plan to sell the vehicle to the global market.
‘We will identify a car that we can develop and produce it in Malaysia, Iran or Turkey,’ Proton Chief Executive Syed Zainal Abidin Syed Mohamed Tahir told reporters on a visit to Iran.
‘For Proton, we are more than happy because we have products that we can share.’
