Now all we have to do is invent the wheel
Part of the beauty of Land Rovers is that some of the design is a little bit old fashioned.
But even we were shocked to hear that these sturdy 4x4’s are now being designed using ‘cave drawings’.
OK so designers aren’t literally sitting around in damp caves in Gaydon drawing boxy off-roaders on the wall, this is the term Jaguar and Land Rover are using to describe a new Virtual Reality ‘cave’.
Around £2million has been invested in a 'Virtual Reality Centre' which will allow engineers and designers to see in life-size three-dimension, models of vehicles and components, all inside a four-walled ‘cave’.
The facility is designed to reduce the need for physical prototypes, saving both time and money in the process.
The ‘cave’ uses projection power equivalent to eight hi-tech cinemas and allows engineers and designers to see in life-size three-dimension, models of vehicles and components.
The designers wear 3-D glasses to see the components in virtual reality, which is twice as clear as the latest High Definition TV’s.
'This is a key advance in our development toolbox,' said Al Kammerer, Product Development Director for Jaguar and Land Rover.
'The awesome power of this project is unparalleled in our industry worldwide and will allow us to produce new vehicles on a much quicker timeline, to update and develop more responsively to customer trends and to be considerably more efficient as well.'
The ‘cave’ is expected to be operational in spring 2008.
