'Can you reserve Cell 3 please...'
Drivers caught on their mobile phones could be thrown in jail under new guidelines, it has been reported.
The new measures were understood to have been announced earlier this year and will be outlined in a new policy document.
Whereas most drivers would still face the usual penalty of a fine and points it is understood that those who are seen to be driving recklessly can face charges of dangerous driving, which carries a two-year maximum sentence.
The measures could also apply to those using a sat-nav or MP3 player while driving.
The guidelines could also see motorists in England and Wales who cause death on the roads facing life imprisonment.
The Director of Public Prosecutions, Sir Ken Macdonald, QC, said: ‘The revised policy responds to public concern about the dangers of driving while using a mobile phone and this means that a charge of dangerous driving will now be the starting point for this offence, where there is clear evidence that danger has been caused by its use.’
