An 85-year-old man has become the oldest person in Canada to be charged with street racing after allegedly driving at 161km/h (100mph).
The man was said to be going eastbound on Highway 407 at Pine Valley Drive, Ontario, in his Oldsmobile Intrigue when he sped past a fully marked OPP cruiser, Sergeant Cam Woolley told reporters.
The officer went in hot pursuit and managed to drive alongside him, signalling for him to slow down.
But the driver apparently didn’t see her and, while the cop was stuck behind other traffic, the man 'actually accelerated and began changing lanes to ... maintain his speed. He was cutting through traffic making lane changes from left to right, and by Keele Street he was doing 161.’
Road conditions were also icy making his geriatric getaway even more dangerous.
‘It's a recipe for disaster at those kinds of speeds,’ Sgt. Woolley said.
When he finally pulled over, Sgt Woolley claimed all the man could say was: ‘God damn.’
It turned out the man was on his way to the bank and then off shopping.
He has reportedly been charged under new racing legislation that was passed last summer, and his vehicle has been impounded.
