Killer drivers could walk free under new sentencing laws that are meant to be tougher, it has been reported.
It is understood people found guilty of careless driving, rather than dangerous, should get a ‘community penalty’, revised guidelines are expected to say.
The rules are expected to be published later this week and appear to go against recent measures to clamp down bad driving caused by using mobile phones and sat navs.
Apparently the Sentencing Guidelines Council has now come up with a system that could mean a driver who kills when talking on a mobile phone could escape prison.
The latest guidelines out tomorrow are expected to say that if a driver kills someone through a lack of consideration or carelessness they should not normally go to prison.
Other killer motorists who could escape jail are those found to be ‘undertaking’, tailgating, going through red lights by mistake and a host of other situations.
A spokeswoman for the SGC said: 'The guidelines will be published tomorrow and everything will be on our website.'
