Green car sales are set to overtake gas-guzzlers for the first time ever this year as motorists respond to fuel prices and environmental incentives, it has been reported.
Sales of new cars in the top £300-a-year road tax bracket dropped last year by 15% to the lowest level yet, according to industry figures published by The Times.
Meanwhile sales of low-emission cars in bands A and B, which pay £35 or less, increased by 17%.
It is understood the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders forecasts that sales of the top band G cars, which includes large SUVs, will continue to drop below sales on cars in bands A and B.
Apparently hybrids are being shunned in favour of small diesels, which made up most of the 128,646 low-emission cars sold last year.
More taxes are on the horizon for gas-guzzlers, while green cars will continue to be encouraged.
