Speeders would hand over keys under new laws
Speeders in Australia are facing having their cars taken away altogether under even tougher new regulations.
Recently authorities in New South Wales revealed they were looking to film the crushing of street racers’ cars and putting the footage on YouTube.
But now the government wants to extend so-called ‘car hoon laws’ so that drivers caught doing excessive speeds could have their vehicles confiscated.
Police Minister David Campbell said changes to the recently written legislation could allow police to confiscate the cars of people who were not involved in street racing, but who were driving well above the speed limit.
Current laws are said to allow police to confiscate cars for burnouts, donuts and in drag racing but not for excessive speeds.
'The work hasn't been done to date on whether or not we should confiscate cars from people doing those speeds,’ Mr Campbell said.
‘[But] it's something worth looking at.
'It's something we need to do the work on, and I'll initiate some discussions.’
