Speeders? I don't believe it...
A new scheme to identify speeding drivers has been launched in Buckinghamshire.
The community Speedwatch scheme works by arming locals with a mobile camera pinpointing different roads in the area.
People seen speeding are then filmed and passed on to the police and are then issued with a warning.
If they continue speeding the police have warned they will face further action.
It is also said to help identify what roads have a speeding problem and could go some way towards working out where to put more speed cameras.
Princes Risborough Town Council are understood to have bought a speeding device that will be shared by the neighbouring parishes.
Councillor Bill Bendyshe-Brown welcomed the tool as an effective way to deal with speeding.
He said: ‘It's going to be a big weapon for us to use.
‘Our top NAG problem is speeding. We have no feeling over what the top roads in the area for speeding are, and this will give us that.’
The Speedwatch instrument will cost £2,000 and cost will be shared among the parishes involved.
Apparently previous schemes using Speeed Indication Device equipment hadn’t worked as the people who were operating them had been verbally abused by motorists.
The new camera can be left in a fixed position as long as an operator is nearby.
Cllr John Coombs added: ‘We have sat on the side roads with SID being verbally abused. The SID had no teeth.’
