Thousands more motorists are expected to be hit by speeding fines thanks to new variable limits on motorways across the country.
Motorists will be snared if they go over the limits, which are set according to the level of traffic.
The thinking behind the limits is that congestion can be reduced and tailbacks avoided by reducing the speed limits on motorways.
Experts believe variable speed limits will stop drivers braking sharply when they approach slower moving vehicles.
Variable speed limits are already used on the M25 west of London and the M42 around Birmingham and cameras enforce the limits.
It is understood that from February 15 all speed cameras will become digital in the variable speed limit section of the M25 from junctions 10 to 16.
Apparently the cameras have until now used film but will be switching to digital, meaning an infinite number of images can be taken.
The ‘speed threshold’ is also about to be reduced to 79mph, it is reported.
Variable speed limits are also expected in M6 between Birmingham and Manchester and on the M1.
