Sat navs are causing millions of pounds worth of damage to Britain’s railway infrastructure, it has been revealed.
Network Rail claims that 2,000 bridges a year are being hit by lorries that are sent down inappropriate roads by their guidance systems.
This results in 5,000 hours of delays and an estimated cost to the rail industry of £10million.
PJ Taylor, from Network Rail, told BBC Radio Five Live that the number of vehicles hitting bridges has soared in recent years.
‘Sat navs are a great tool but they are not an alternative for keeping your wits about you and obeying the rules of the road,’ he said.
The rail industry is now in talks with sat nav manufacturers to address the problem.
Meanwhile Network Rail is mapping the locations of low bridges to feed to sat nav companies so that they would show up on the routes.
