If it struck anyone as slightly odd that Tata, a company that has just revealed the world’s cheapest car, would want to buy a struggling premium brand like Jag it appears all may soon be revealed.
Tata is expected to finally buy Land Rover and Jaguar off Ford very soon, but if reports are to be believed the Indian firm is looking to offload Jag as soon as possible.
In what is starting to sound a little familiar, Tata is understood to be buying the pair just to get its hands on Land Rover, partly because its founder Ratan Tata has previously expressed his love for Land Rover, calling it the ‘ride of the Rajas’.
Tata does make off-roaders and could do with the expertise, leaving Jaguar as a bit of an odd one out.
One source told Inside Line that Mr Tata recently purchased a 450-acre parcel of land in Gurgaon, outside New Delhi, and is hoping to build a factory to produce Land Rovers.
‘But Jaguar will be spun off almost immediately,’ said the source.
The reports may dismay Jaguar unions who previously said that a deal with Tata would be in the best interests of workers.
