Set to become a more common sight?
Lewisham is set to become the first London council to introduce a 20mph speed limit on practically every road, it has been reported.
Currently there is a 30mph maximum, but Lewisham could become a pioneer for a virtually blanket 20mph limit.
The new proposals are said to have been inspired by the Green Party and the council’s sustainable development select committee is understood to have voted in favour of it.
If the scheme goes ahead Lewisham would become a guinea pig for the rest of the capital.
The proposals are being pushed through to eliminate the need for costly speed humps and encourage people to walk or cycle.
Up until now 20mph zones have been limited to small areas but London mayor Ken Livingstone is understood to be keen to introduce them across the capital.
The AA has warned that 20mph zones will only make travel more difficult and argues 20mph zones should only be in sensitive or residential areas.
