There are some drivers in the US who simply refuse to pay speeding fines after being nabbed by speed cameras – the police.
Apparently in the last eight months of last year, Montomery County’s new speed cameras recorded 224 cases in which cops were travelling more than 10mph over the speed limit.
Officials dished out dozens of $40 (£20! Ed) fines accordingly.
76 of those tickets were dismissed because officers were responding to emergency calls or had valid reasons to break the limit.
But 148 didn’t have an excuse and said they weren’t going to pay because the tickets are issues to the owner of the vehicle – in this case the county – and not the driver.
Police Chief Thomas Manger said: ‘We are not above the law.
‘It is imperative that the police department hold itself to the same standards that we're holding the public to.’
Manger added that officers who continue to ignore the fines might be disciplined.
