Ferrari and Porsche take note: Hyundai has announced its own arrival into ‘supercar territory’ with its Genesis Coupe.
The car has been released at the New York International Show and will be powered by two engines, one being a mighty 212bhp turbo four-cylinder.
If that wasn’t enough for Lamborghini to worry about the coupe will also pack a fearsome 310bhp 3.8 litre V6.
Despite the fact Hyundai is serious that this is its first ‘supercar’ it could actually provide some decent, affordable rear-drive fun.
It uses a MacPherson strut dual-link front suspension and a five-link rear suspension setup. Both engines are mated to a standard six-speed manual transmission with an auto option and have 18-inch alloys or optional 19-inch wheels.
The estimated 0-60 time of the V6 is ‘under six seconds’ and the car should hit 149mph, said Hyundai.
‘These are the first pictures of Hyundai’s Genesis Coupe, a purpose-built rear-wheel drive sports coupe that promises to take the Korean manufacturer into supercar territory for the first time,’ said the company’s press release.
John Krafcik, of Hyundai Motor America, added: ‘We think our entry-level Genesis Coupe 2.0t, with its unique combination of rear-wheel drive and four-cylinder turbo power, offers an intriguing alternative to existing front-wheel drive sports coupes.
‘The 3.8-litre version takes things to an even higher level, rivalling the capability of premium coupes.’
