The majority of British drivers believe the presence of speed cameras makes their driving worse, it has been revealed.
53% of drivers believe their attention is distracted from the road ahead as a result of having to look out for speed cameras, a new survey found.
In addition, one in three drivers brake instinctively on seeing a camera regardless of their vehicle's speed, posing a clear danger to any cars following behind.
Many motorists say they are often unaware of deviations from national speed restrictions - 52% stated that there is insufficient signage to notify them of local speed limits.
'It is worrying that many people think that speed cameras are having an adverse effect on their driving, especially given that they were introduced as a means of improving road safety in the first place,' said James Flynn OBE, CEO of RoadPilot, that commissioned the survey.
