The Government intends to make the car ‘the least attractive option’ in certain areas, PistonHeads has learnt.
A letter from Caroline Flint, minister for housing and planning, has been obtained by us and shows that the Government is planning a war on cars in favour of walking and cycling.
The Government’s vision of the eco-town of the future emerged after a concerned resident of Duxford wrote to Andrew Lansley, local MP for South Cambridgeshire.
The local had become concerned that 15mph speed limits would be introduced in eco-towns after reading a news story on PistonHeads.com
He believed that a 15mph limit would increase emissions rather than decrease them.
Lansley forwarded the letter to Flint and she replied with details of the proposed eco-towns.
In it she said that the Government wouldn't introduce 15mph limits but would seek to ‘reduce the reliance on cars’ by making it the least attractive way of getting around.
People would have to walk, cycle or get buses instead.
