Here at PH Towers we are going to stick our collective necks out and say that the new Mercedes GLK is not one of our favourite cars to look at. So whether these one-off custom versions that are heading to SEMA improve its looks is debatable but not out of the realms of possibility. The German firm was happy to give four of its new compact SUVs to tuners, to be used as a blank canvas. What they came back with ranges from the bizarre to the ridiculous.
Well-known auto tweaker Brabus perhaps produced the most conventional version – the Widestar – which features extended wheel arches, new wheels and bumpers, and a customised interior. Then it gets weird.
Boulevard Customs decided to lop the roof off the GLK, added a wide-body kit and 26” wheels. The result is called the Urban Whip and looks like a cross between a Golf buggy and a child’s pedal car.
The RENNtech Rally Racer is inspired by a Pike Peak hillclimb car but features a hybrid powertrain, with the electric motor giving an extra acceleration boost off the line and through the twisties. Finally the legendary Motor Cars has created the Four Corners Rock Crawler, which has a tougher 4WD system plus a winch to tow skateboarders.
