Some speeders could get six points
Drivers who are caught breaking the speed limit ‘excessively’ twice could be banned under new government proposals. The new harsher rules could include those caught travelling at over 90mph on the motorway.
As the law currently stands most speeding offences are punished with a fine and three points. But a new government consultation paper sets out plans to hit motorists with 12 points and an automatic disqualification if they are caught twice.
The proposals are part of a draft of new measures that the government hopes will make the streets safer. Road Safety Minister Jim Fitzpatrick told the BBC's Today programme the measures were about being on the side of the safe motorist.
He said the government wanted to address the 2,946 deaths and 30,000 serious injuries on our roads last year. ‘Notwithstanding that these are the best figures we've ever had, we know that we can do more and that we can reduce the numbers of people being killed and seriously injured and that means looking at speeding, drink driving, drug driving, careless driving and people not wearing seatbelts.’
Also under consideration is the idea of cutting the penalty for minor speeding offences to two points. The document is a three month consultation and ministers are said to be still gathering evidence on whether the drink-drive limit be lowered.
