PCGB have bought a 924S for £1,000
There’s always a few cheap Porsches lurking around in the classifieds, but for many of us that is exactly where they stay. Although the idea of getting a 924 or 944 for a few hundred pounds sounds tempting, the thought of actually doing it can be terrifying.
However, to prove that a decent Porsche can be had for a grand the Porsche Club GB (PCGB) is staging its own ‘£1,000 challenge’, where they hope to show it is not as intimidating as it might sound. The 924S they have bought will be on display at the PistonHeads Show.
PCGB say that, by looking in the right places, whether it’s Auto Trader, eBay or the local classifieds, the 1980’s front-engined 924, 944 and 928 are well within the grasp of budget Porsche ownership. Despite the diminutive price tag, the 924 still offers racing car technology such as a transaxle gearbox and four-wheel disc brakes, as well as being able to reach 125mph.
On the stand PCGB will be showing how they bought the car, what they looked for and offering any tips and hints to those who want to take the plunge. They will also warn you of the potential pitfalls involved.
‘Porsche ownership doesn’t have to be expensive; we’ve found a 924S for the show, well within the £1,000 budget, and it’s stunning, with only 55,000 miles on the clock,’ said Geoff Ives, Events Director for Porsche Club GB.
‘It costs the current owner only £80 a year for insurance, and will average over 30mpg on a long run, so isn’t necessarily expensive to run. Factor in the driving fun and great club social scene, and owning a Porsche can be hugely satisfying.’
The club is also organising the ‘Five Decades of the 911” display at the show, over 20 variants of the legendary GT car expected, from as far back as 1963.
‘Porsche prices are more affordable than ever before,’ said PistonHeads Show Manager David Ryan. ‘The secret is buying a solid, good, cheap Porsche, so the advice of PCGB will be invaluable to anyone considering a purchase. I’m sure there’ll be plenty of PistonHeads visitors scanning the internet for a bargain after the show.’
