Rome is mulling over the possibility of adding a street race to the Formula One calendar. The idea was once suggested in 1984 by former Formula Two driver and World Superbike promoter Maurizio Flammini, and again he has come up with a proposal.
'It's an idea Flammini has proposed and mayor Gianni Alemanno has said it is possible,' a city council spokesman said. Flammini has proposed using the streets of the Esposizione Universale Roma (EUR) district of the city.
‘We could use the Colosseum,’ joked deputy mayor Mauro Cutrufo. ‘No, EUR is an historic area of Rome born in the 1950s that is a symbol of the cultural strategy of this country.’
Getting a Monaco-style street race in Rome could be difficult as F1 supremo is apparently keen to bring a race to South Korea in 2010 and India the following year.
It is understood there is also pressure to bring F1 back to North America. Street races have even been suggested for London and Paris in recent years. One man who is reportedly against the idea is Ferrari president Luca di Montezemolo.
'At least Monaco has its own history but to have three or four Monacos is too much,' di Montezemolo said last year.
