There were not one but two Renault Sport models unveiled on the French carmaker’s stand at the ’09 Geneva show. First up was the hotly anticipated Megane Renault Sport which now features 250bhp and the choice of two chassis – ‘Sport’ and ‘Cup’ with a limited slip differential.
The car is called a coupe and while this may be stretching it a little it has sharp and distinctive styling. The ‘RS’ has a new-generation 2-litre 16-valve turbocharged petrol engine with maximum power arriving at 5,500rpm and peak torque of 250lb ft from3,000rpm.
Renault says the Sport’s 2.0 T engine's twin-scroll turbo is ‘exceptionally responsive and particularly flexible at lows revs’, with 80% of maximum torque available from 1,900rpm.
The engine of New Mégane Renault Sport drives through a six-speed manual gearbox. The Mégane Renault Sport is equipped with ESC which is thankfully fully disconnectable.
The front bumper incorporates LED daytime running lights, and the firm claims the splitter ‘recalls the low-slung nose of the R28 Formula 1 car’.
Jérôme Stoll, executive vice president of sales and marketing, unveiled another six models in just ten minutes at the show, and one of them was the new Clio Renault Sport. He said it was a ‘Geneva tradition’ for Renault to unveil a sporty model and the new Clio mirrored the modern styling of its big brother.
The new Clio RS is more powerful with 203hp and comes in two forms – the ‘Luxe’ and ‘Cup’. The latter is 36kg lighter and both models have what Renault calls ‘Formula 1-derived aerodynamics’, including front-wing air-extractors, a rear diffuser and a front splitter.
