Earlier this week we revealed the new Brabus tuned Mercedes E-Class, well now it’s the turn of Merc’s in-house performance arm AMG.
The E63 AMG uses a 6.3-litre V8, tuned to develop 511bhp and 465lb ft of torque. Cars will come fitted with AMG’s seven-speed Speedshift MCT gearbox, taken from the SL63, that produces rev-matched gear changes and allows a choice of four shift settings. In its most dynamic setting, shifts will be punched through in 100 milliseconds.
Performance is 'typical' for an AMG-tuned car, with an improved 0-60mph time of 4.4seconds and a top speed of 186mph, although this will be limited to 155mph in standard guise.
AMG also claim the new model is more fuel efficient thanks to the new 'box, reduced friction engine components and a new fuel delivery system adding up to a 12% efficiency gain over the previous model. A combined cycle figure of 22.4mpg is claimed.
A more responsive power steering rack has been fitted to compliment the new sports suspension and electronically controlled dampers. The rear axle gets special AMG air springs that allow the vehicle to maintain a constant ride height, while the front uses steel spring struts that help to maximise steering feel.
Like the Brabus, there are some minor cosmetic changes to the E63 that include AMG badging, moderately flared wheel arches and side skirting. There’s also a more aggressive front end with larger air intakes and LED running lights, while the rear has been modified to accommodate the chrome-plated twin exhaust.
Fitted to the E63 as standard are 18-inch alloys, but customers will also have the option of larger wheels with the AMG Performance Package. That gets you lightweight 19-inch alloys, AMG Performance suspension, a locking rear differential, three-spoke steering wheel and no electronic speed restriction. Prices are still TBC.
