UK chancellor Alistair Darling has announced the long-awaited scrappage scheme which will see buyers scrapping old cars being offered grants of £2k against the purchase of new
2p on fuel, and £2k for your old car
The scheme will be launched next month, and will run until March next year. Full details will be confirmed later today, but it is expected that the scheme will apply to the scrappage of any vehicle over nine years old when a new vehicle is purchased. It is also expected that the scheme won't apply only to 'low-carbon' vehicles as the green lobby has called for, as this would adversely effect the UK's domestic car industry.
In his budget speech Darling also announced the imposition of an additional 2 pence per litre on fuel from September, and the re-launch of the fuel tax escalator with an extra penny a litre added every year until 2012.
