A 1957 Ferrari 250 Testa Rossa has smashed the world record for the most expensive car sold at auction.
Yesterday’s Ferrari Leggenda e Passione auction, held within the grounds of Ferrari’s famous Maranello factory, saw a collection of rare cars go under the hammer, but it was the 250 TR that stole the show with its enormous €9,020,000 (£8m) sale price.
Despite the current turbulent financial times the previous world record, held by a 1961 Ferrari 250 GT SWB California Spyder purchased by radio DJ Chris Evans, was eclipsed by €1,980,000 (£1.75m).
Only 22 pontoon-fender Ferrari 250 TRs were built between 1957 and 1958, and were extensively raced until 1961, during which time they secured 10 international race victories.
